ABSTRACT

Selenoproteins are proteins that contain the 21st amino acid Selenocysteine (Sec) in their sequence. This amino acid is characterized for having a selenium atom and for being encoded by the UGA codon which is also a stop codon. Therefore, to be incorporated in the protein sequence, it is required the presence of a RNA secondary structure, called the SECIS element, in the 3’ untranslated region (3’UTR).

The main aim of this project is to predict the selenoproteins present in Pogona vitticeps, a bearded dragon naturally from Australia, as they have not been described before. In order to do that, we have written a program in perl language and other bioinformatic tools have been used to search the selenoproteins of Pogona vitticeps in a selenoprotein data base.
